The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking applicants for the position of General Maintenance Technician/Groundskeeper. The selected candidate will be responsible for performing various aspects of facility maintenance and repair tasks, moving and lifting of furniture and equipment, maintenance of the swimming pool, and various groundskeeping duties. Plumbing experience preferred. Candidates should possess four to five years of relevant experience in a related field.  This is a 12-month, hourly position.  Applications will be considered until the position is filled.

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for an Independent Living Skills Instructor.  Duties include the ability to provide independent living skills instruction and career development to secondary students with visual impairments.  Bachelor’s degree or higher is required in one of the following: Visual Impairments, Family and Consumer Science or Career/Technical/Vocational. Certification in vision is preferred but can be acquired after hire. Must possess or be eligible for NM Public Education Department licensure.  Will be required to become Braille proficient.  Full‑time, 9-month contract for the 25-26 school year.  Applications accepted until filled.

New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NMSBVI) is currently recruiting a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) to assist blind and visually impaired students achieve their greatest level of independence. Requirements include a Bachelor’s degree or higher, current ACVREP certification, and eligibility for O&M licensure from the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED). This is a full-time, 9-month position working on a residential campus with students ages 3-21, some of whom have multiple disabilities. Position available for the 26-27 school year. The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking an Itinerant and Mentor TSVI. The Itinerant and Mentor TSVI will provide instructional support to the Instruction Department and area school districts, by providing direct services to students with visual impairments within the local area districts to NMSBVI Main Campus. Duties will also include student assessment, support to districts in developing and participating in IEP meetings, direct service, and consultation and support to district teachers and related services providers to include triannual evaluation considerations.  The Itinerant and Mentor TSVI will also provide mentoring supports to TSVIs on NMSBVI Main Campus, to include ensuring alignment with emerging best practices, innovative ideas and new technologies, developing and providing professional development opportunities, and supporting staff in completion of functional vision assessments and learning media assessments.   Bachelor’s Degree or higher, degree/certification as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments. Three years working as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments required.  Valid NM Public Education Department license required.  Previous experience with special education and multiply impaired preferred. This is a 9-month position.  Position available for the 2026-2027 school year.  Applications accepted until filled.

Education Substitutes assist students who are blind/visually impaired with instructional tasks in classroom.  Substitutes are on an “as-needed” and “on-call” basis.

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is currently recruiting for Registered Nurse, Substitutes.  These individuals plan and implement health care services to visually and/or multiply impaired students.  The ability to demonstrate current knowledge in professional issues in school nursing, school and community health, communicable disease control, health assessment, acute and chronic health conditions, injury prevention and emergency care, student issues, and legal/ethical health policies.  New Mexico Board of Nursing Multicompact Licensure is required, eligible for certification from the New Mexico Public Education Department and a minimum of two years’ experience, preferably in pediatrics.  Work schedule is Sunday –Friday, as well as occasional weekends and/or out of state travel when necessary.  As a substitute will be on an as needed basis.   Applications accepted until filled.

New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking application for a Speech Therapist.  The speech language therapist is responsible for all diagnostic services which include diagnosis of speech, language, and voice disorders and for implementation of therapeutic measures to students with visual impairments.  BS degree or higher in Speech Therapy, eligible for New Mexico PED licensure is required.  Background/experience in teaching students with visual/multiple impairments preferred.  Full‑time contract for the 2026-2027 school year. Performs instructional tasks in classroom to assist licensed teaching staff.  High School diploma/GED and NM Public Education Department Level 3 licensure will be required.  Background/experience in working with visual/multiply-impaired students is preferred.  Full-time position will be required to become Braille proficient.  Full-time, 9-month position for the 2024-2025 school year.  Applications accepted until filled. 

Drivers/Caregivers with background/experience in transporting or working with children with visual impairments and/or multiple disabilities is preferred.  Required to assist with self-help routines with students.  Driving will include local and statewide travel as well as occasional out of state travel.  CDL with school bus and passenger endorsement preferred but not required.  Good driving record required.  These are 9-month part-time/substitute positions with extended runs on Fridays and Sundays, with some short runs during weekdays.  Applications accepted until filled.

Duties:

1. Participates as member of the Individual Educational Program (IEP) Committee and assists in the development of an IEP for assigned students.

2. Provides direct instruction to students that address the Common Core Standards or Expanded Grade Band Expectations, the student’s specific IEP goals and/or objectives and the Expanded Core Curriculum.

3. Performs assessments of student skills on a regular basis and uses data from various New Mexico state assessments to determine the appropriate academic and blind/visually impaired goals and/or objectives to be presented at IEPs.

4. Develops and uses unique instructional methods and curriculums that will maximize a student’s learning and IEP goal attainment.

5. Observes students for purposes of monitoring and modifying student academic and social behaviors.

6. Documents and evaluates student progress and behaviors by maintaining appropriate supporting data, completing progress reports, and keeping attendance records.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Elementary, Secondary or Special Education and the following licenses: Level Three-A Instructional Leader Pre K-12 Specialty Area, State of New Mexico, and  Level Three-A Instructional Leader Pre K-12 Special Education, State of New Mexico.

The New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired Early Childhood Program is currently recruiting for a RN/LPN for 4 days a week (Mon, Tue, Thur, & Fri).  This position will provide health care services to visually and/or multiply impaired students in an educational pre-school setting.  New Mexico Board of Nursing Licensure is required, and must hold or obtain NM Public Education Department licensure; minimum of two years experience, preferably in pediatrics.
